Aya Uma Mask Masks of the "Aya Uma": The "Aya Uma" is a mythological character considered to be the spirit of the mountain, which comes down to the indigenous communities of the Northern Sierra of Ecuador to accompany them during one of their most important ancestral celebrations: the "Inti Raymi" (dedicated to the sun and the harvest). This celebration starts on June 22nd, the summer solstice. The mask of the "Aya Uma" has twelve horns symbolizing the months of the year, and two faces (one on each side), which stand for day and night. Special members of the community are chosen to be "Aya Umas" and lead the dancers on the processions. http://www.exploringecuador.com/en_ar_inti_raymi.htm Link to more information on the masks and the Inti Raymi festival as celebrated in Ecuador. |
